Post-Replacement Essential
Alignment After Strut Replacement
A wheel alignment after strut replacement is not optional. Here is why it matters, what it costs, and what the process involves.
Front-wheel alignment
$50 - $100
4-wheel alignment
$75 - $150
Recommended
Alignment + tire balance
$120 - $200
Why Alignment Is Essential After Strut Replacement
Struts are structural suspension components. When you remove and reinstall them — even with the same brand and specifications — the camber (inward/outward tilt) and toe (pointing in/out) angles change. These angles are set to fractions of a degree, and even small deviations cause problems.
What Happens If You Skip Alignment
- Rapid tire wear: Misaligned wheels can wear tire edges 3-5x faster than normal. A $600-$800 set of tires may need replacing in 15,000 miles instead of 50,000+.
- Vehicle pulls to one side: You'll constantly fight the steering wheel to drive straight, causing driver fatigue and reducing safety.
- Reduced fuel efficiency: Misaligned tires create drag, reducing fuel economy by 2-5%.
- Poor handling: The vehicle won't respond as precisely to steering inputs, especially in emergency maneuvers.
What the Alignment Process Involves
A professional alignment takes 30-60 minutes and uses laser or camera-based equipment to measure and adjust three angles:
| Angle | What It Controls | Effect If Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Camber | Inward/outward tilt of wheel (viewed from front) | Inside or outside edge tire wear |
| Toe | Direction wheels point (viewed from above) | Feathered tire wear, pulling |
| Caster | Steering axis tilt (viewed from side) | Steering feel, straight-line stability |
After strut replacement, camber is the most commonly affected angle. The mechanic adjusts camber using eccentric bolts on the strut-to-knuckle connection, and toe is adjusted via the tie rod ends.
When to Get the Alignment
Get aligned immediately after strut replacement — ideally on the same visit. Most shops include it in the strut job or offer it at a discount. If you do the strut work yourself (DIY), drive carefully and get aligned within 50 miles. Every mile you drive misaligned wears your tires unevenly.
Should I Get New Tires at the Same Time?
If your tires have cupping, scalloping, or uneven wear from the old struts, new tires are worth considering. Aligning wheels with worn tires means the new alignment compensates for the wear pattern, which isn't ideal. However, if tires have 50%+ tread life remaining with even wear, alignment alone is fine.
Bundle discount: Many shops offer 10-20% off alignment when done with strut replacement. Ask for the bundled price before approving the work. National chains like Firestone and NTB offer lifetime alignment packages ($200-$250) that cover unlimited alignments — worth it if you plan to keep the vehicle.
